Jesus, the church, and the sharkia wind

We are here for 4000 to 5000 weeks if we are lucky. in that short short time all the joys and sorrows of our lives will happen. Last week we had Luke’s beatitudes where Jesus lays out his value system. In short terms when its good, stand by me, when its bad I’ll stand by you.

This week we see it all go a bit unexpectedly wrong for our disciples. A sudden storm comes up and it all gets a bit scary. In reality they could/should have been at least a little more prepared for this. Sudden storms in the sea of Galilee happen quite a lot, usually in the afternoons, the “Sharkia” wind can rise up as the evening cools and cold air is sucked in, causing 10-foot waves and high winds. So, it’s expectedly unexpected; life happens while you are making plans.

Last year I was employed in a well-paid job, and my wife had never had a day’s illness in her life. Both those things changed last year, Paula got very ill and thankfully recovered, and then I Lost my job.

I bet you guys all have your own stories of 2024 and the events that sprung up throughout the course of the year . Today’s reading is about knowing where to turn when the sharkia wind happens and ten-foot waves spring up and all you can do is paddle for your life, sometimes it seems with a leaky bucket.

One of the defining things about last year for me was how my friends in our churches all rallied around Paula and me and how I knew the presence of our lord. He really rested on me, and you guys and I knew through all of the highs and lows I wasn’t alone in the boat.

I really felt him with me resting on me a proper presence all the time, and then I had you guys, for which I am forever grateful. So I found how real Jesus could be and where our church really shows it is this lifes expression of Jesus love.

Now before each job interview, I ask for his help and while accepting his lead and wanting to discern what he wants for my life. I do ask for his help and ask to make things go my way. I know that’s dissonance but it’s actually the best I can do.

The disciples had already left everything to follow him, so their moment of panic should be seen in context, and I had my moments of panic these last few months.
The real trick is when your moment arrives, and I can speak from personal experience,

When your moment arrives, turn to him and properly ask for help. He wants to help he loves you. He is always with you, in both challenging and easy times, during mundane and thrilling moments. He is omnipresent, existing everywhere, all the time simultaneously.
As Paul says you are inside him, and he is inside you, so he shares all your moments.

Today’s reading is simple, when the storm comes, share it with him, and ask for his help, knowing he can help.

Thats it
Amen
